What is OCR?

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition and is the recognition of machine printed characters.  It is a technology that has developed and improved over the last 20 years. 

There are many OCR vendors and the technology is very cheap, often bundled "free" with low end scanners such as the Kodak i30/i40.  Some of the pioneers of this technology include Abbyy, Cognitive Enterprises and Scansoft (Textbridge) and include Typically ICR vendors will include OCR technology within their solution.  Often OCR is considered a sub-set of ICR as some of the same techniques are necessary.

Cheap technology.  Why necessary, best approach is to have the original source.  Sometime necessary for recognising indexing information on forms instead of barcodes.
